After the Turkish War of Independence, which we won under the leadership of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, on October 29, 1923, the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye declared the Republican administration. We swear once again that on the path that our great leader has paved, we will walk ceaselessly toward the aims that he has set and we commemorate with respect and longing Atatürk, who passed away on November 10.
TOWARDS THE MEDITERRANEAN
We made a crown for our proud heads from liberty
We engraved the Republic in our hearts with victory…
We drank water from Sakarya with those steel bayonets,
And with a handful of undaunted soldiers whose homes were destroyed…
We ran to that finger saying… “The goal is Mediterranean, soldier!”
We ran to pick roses from the victory gardens…
Thousands of stars have guided us from the heavens,
Our flag is overflowing from the red horizons.
We ran like lions roaring from mountains to mountains
To save the homeland from the beasts’ mouths.
